Instead of traditional closed upper cabinets, go for storage that feels airy instead of bulky. Only and repeat only, do this if you are not a tornado in the kitchen, and can keep everything neat and tidy. This is not just keeping things tidy and tucked away, although it is that too. It is about maintaining clean lines, without tons of overly decorative details. Avoid things like corbels and ornate cabinet pulls, and opt for a more minimalist look instead. The small metal hardware and modern cabinet fronts in kitchen keep things open and fuss free.
Go for shiny surface finishes. These will reflect light and distribute it all around the room, making it feel much larger than it actually is. Opt for shiny splash backs, counter tops and high gloss cupboard doors and shelving. When choosing your flooring, whether it is tiles, wood or patterned, make sure it is laid length-ways down the kitchen. This will draw the eye and elongate the room. If you lay it sideways, the eye will naturally be drawn sideways and it will make the room feel much shorter and smaller.
