Hanging baskets and window boxes are ideal for small gardens. They create interest and help add a vertical dimension. Patio and stair railings are great places for hanging pots. Window boxes and wall planters are another way to grow up. Gardens are not just for plants. Hang lanterns, wind chimes and other outdoor décor too.
Vegetables need a good 6 or more hours of sun each day. Without sun, the fruits will not ripen and the plants will be stressed. Even if you are sun challenged, there are a few vegetables that can survive in light shade, lettuce and other greens, broccoli and cole crops. Vegetables also require regular watering.
After deciding to grow your own vegetables, choosing the right plants for your space may be the most important decision you will make. Many plants will require a minimum of 6 hours of direct sun per day and others will prefer partial shade during the hottest days of the summer. Assess your space, choose wisely and good luck.
You do not need a large area to have a vegetable garden. You do need good soil, plenty of sunshine, a water source and probably a fence. If you think the deer love your Hostas, the entire woodland community is going to enjoy your vegetable garden. If you plant it, they will come. If you have a small sunny spot in your yard, or even on your patio, you can grow vegetables.
