The use of colour in interior decor is extremely important for bringing personality and character to a room. Even simply adding a pop of colour can change an interior space dramatically, whether it be through a daring paint colour choice or by adding a variety of home accessories and furniture. Previous interior colour trends have seen minimalistic neutral interior colour schemes and pastel colour palettes, we have a feeling this years interior colour trends will be a lot more daring.
Other rooms are a bit more difficult, such as sitting rooms or dens. Do not just scatter furnishings about the room first, find a focus or purpose for the room, and then place the furnishings around that focal point. For example a fireplace, a gaming table, a large painting, or even a coffee table that encourages guests to sit and converse.
The textural elements of a room often get over looked. Interior designers are schooled and excel at this textural design secret, a neutral backdrop creates a welcoming interior when mixed with warm textures such as rough hewn wooden elements, shiny tiles, nubby linens, and brushed velvets. If walls are painted in a bright orange, for example, then the bold color takes center-stage, making any textural elements disappear into the backdrop. This is not necessarily a bad thing, when done properly, but it can make a room feel unwelcoming by omitting a layered, textural design.
While it is really fun to look through showrooms that are full of brand new modern furnishings, do not get carried away and buy everything at one time and one place. Doing this results in a common interior design mistake buying everything matchy, resulting in a home that lacks character. How do we add character? Slowly, over time. It can take years to have your home fully complete and fully designed.
